Nicer Days for a Ride

Morning weigh-in (Friday) 176.5#, 14% body fat
Morning weigh-in (Saturday) 175.5#, 13% body fat

Went and saw Laurie Anderson last night at Lafayette's Williams Center for the Arts, not a performance but a lecture about what she's been doing lately (artist in residence at NASA, etc) and thinking about. Very interesting! I went with Doug & Lori, and Eric & Kris (we all had to sit separately though), and we all agreed we were mesmerized. Afterwards was dinner at Which Brew.

The last few days have been gorgeous. No run Thursday, but I got in a good ride after work, and ran & biked (benchmark, 1:25 time: not bad) yesterday. Off to the coffee shop, then the gym right now.

UPDATE: I am once again a legally licensed driver.

Nice Day for a Ride

Morning weigh-in: 176.5#, 12.5% body fat

No running this morning: I was up pretty late last night. I'll probably do a road ride tonight, it looks beautiful outside.

Taxes are done, car is fixed, and computer media problems are pretty much solved, but now I must deal with: sound card, driver's license, bills coming due again, laundry piling up (& clean stash is dwindling), and of course the house is a disaster. Also, my mountain bike is somewhere between Springdale UT and Bethlehem PA, but I still don't have the tracking number. Much has been done, but much still remains to be done.

By the way, I didn't mention this yesterday but on the way home last night I saw: a bunch of buzzards eating roadkill deer in a cornfield (a leftover from the fall -- yuck!), a tom turkey, a bunch of Canada geese and a herd of deer. Tonight I hope to spot some snipe, a gryphon and maybe a hippogator...

Good News and Bad News

Morning weigh-in: 179#, 11.5% body fat (that's the bad news)

The good news is, there's no real problem with my smartcard USB connection. It just takes a few seconds for the hardware to reset itself & detect the reinserted memory chip, and then mounting is fine. Still have to solve the CD-RW situation though.

Ran two miles this morning, no riding planned for tonight. I'll probably go to the gym & spin tomorrow, and do a Hellertown hill ride on Friday if the weather is nice.

My weight problem, as always, comes down to diet. I think that careful dieting was the key to my weight loss earlier in the year, and diet backsliding is why, no matter how much I exercise, I'm not losing weight now -- my body is not so much strong or enduring, as it is efficient, and any physical stress I give it hardly distracts from its main goal of lipo-loading... So, I'm back on the food wagon as of today -- after last night's Which Brew dinner stop, to see Joe & show him my trip photos.

Anyway, back to work...

PS Tonight I finish my taxes -- rather, H&R Block will finish them.

UPDATE: Good news: looks like I got the CD-RW to work, though it's still not "drag & drop" the way I'd like -- & maybe never will be? Taxes are done, too. Next piece of bad news: just realized my driver's license expired on the 10th -- smooth move, Don! Oh well, deal with it.

Situation Normal: back to the obsession(s)

Morning weigh-in: 178.5#, 10.5% body fat (dehydration?)

Took yesterday off (mainly because of sleep cycle issues) but ran 2 miles this morning, easy pace. Soon I'll have to start kicking in the harder, speed-building workouts. The week off was nice, but my legs were tired this morning.

I was kind of glad to see my weight wasn't too high; I was a little worried that despite the riding, the excess (actually, "excessive" would be the more correct word) calorie intake during vacation would put me way up. (We were joking that we should have another contest: "Lose the Flab from Moab.")

Was up late again last night, working on the computer. I want to burn some CD's, and found that my system only recognizes the CD-RW as read-only. I must recompile the kernel to add a special IDE-SCSI module, then reconfigure LILO to recognize the CD as a SCSI device, and then tweak /etc/fstab. Meantime, I find that if you mount & unmount the USB memory chip, remove the chip & replace it, any further attempts to remount will fail. (However, I did find that adding the Windows partition to /etc/fstab allows non-root write access.) Looks like my Linux "voyage of discovery" continues...

I'm Baaaaaack!

Back from vacation, that is. Great time in Moab and other locations throughout southern Utah -- Red Canyon (near Bryce Canyon) and Springdale (near Zion National Park) to be more specific. Great riding, OK weather, plenty o'good times but now it's over. More on this, plus maybe pictures, later in the week. Also, I celebrated my birthday out West: I'm now 41 years old. In a few more years I'll be an adult...

Been a Long Time Since I Did the Stroll

I'm back. Wasn't really planning on disappearing, but you know how the time does fly... Weight: has been pretty stable at about 177# for most of this time, but it looks like it's starting to creep up; percent body fat is all over the map.

In the news:

Running is coming along OK, and I've been doing longer and faster runs on Saturday. When I run for time, my pace is on target for my sub-25-minute 5K. Next week is a rest week for running.

Biking is also coming along. I finally got my road bike refurbished, totally new Campagnolo component group including wheels. My mountain bike is in the care of UPS, on the way out to Utah (I hope).

Mike Bellush is now a married man (again). His wedding was last Saturday. Traditional Jewish wedding, really nice reception, saw the whole McVay clan there.

I would have thought I posted something here, but looking back I guess I didn't: I'm an uncle, my brother & his wife are the proud parents of Olivia Grace Kelly.

New Toy Alert: I got a digital camera, a Sony P-72 for my Utah vacation.

Vacation: I'll be gone out West, Moab and other Utah destinations, all of next week. Me, Brian, Joe & Cindy, Doug, Eric, and Bob. Should be way cool, stay tuned for stories & pictures...

back

Morning weigh-in (Sunday): 179# 12.5%
Morning weigh-in (Monday): 175.5# 10.5%
Morning weigh-in (Tuesday): 177.5# 12%

Forgot to check Saturday, forgot what weight was Friday. Oh well.

Interesting times lately: Thursday nite was crazy at Which Brew, like someone put flirt juice in the beer or something, the ladies were actually kind of ahh... aggressive, not that I'm complaining... Friday, Joe said he was "scared to go back," but I went & caught the band "Warm Apple Cider" (friends of bartender Carrie, not bad but I've heard better). Talking to some girl, thought it would be a reprise of the previous nite (she actually asked me if I came there often) but not this time.

Saturday was the Wind Gap Science fair, which I (among others) judged. It meant getting up a little early (and dealing with a tractor trailer lying on its side, blocking the road into Wind Gap, making me & everyone else late), but way fun. I worked with Charles, a High School aquabiology teacher, and Lauren, a microbiologist for a vitamin maker, and we judged the 7th Grade and 1st Grade exhibits. Some were pretty lame (I'm talking about the 7th graders) but some were very good. The younger kids were cute and much more fun, though you couldn't expect much in the way of "experimental science" from them; Al & Colette's son John was among the 1st Graders & had something about a tractor pull. (Al & Colette were both there as well; she was with John & Al was judging the Egg Drop contest.) Interesting day, or rather, morning. In the afternoon I went down to the Lehigh and ran for an hour, easy pace, and the evening was dinner with friends -- while we were at the bar waiting for our table, the bartender kept us entertained with amazing card & magic tricks.

Sunday was spent riding in Jim Thorpe, a good day of riding I must say, but I guess you had to be there...

Monday was the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour. Awesome, but more about it some other time.

This brings me up to date here, signing off.

backsliding

Morning weigh-in (Monday): 175.5#, 14% body fat
Morning weigh-in (Tuesday): 179#, 13.5% body fat

Nothing much to say, blew off spinning last nite (had to do some car registration stuff) then ate a ton of bar food at Which Brew. Very tired this morning, so I blew off running in favor of extra sleep. Weight wasn't too forgiving, so I also had a sausage egg & cheese sandwich at work...

Just heard a young jazz pianist nemed Vijay Iyer, bought both his albums online. You heard it here first folks, this guy is the one they'll be talking and writing books about in a hundred years or so, destined (unless I jinx him) for greatness.

Flake Central

Morning weigh-in: 177#, 13% body fat

I woke up tired, so blew off both the MTB ride (actually, blew that off last nite) then blew off the road ride, since it sounded like it would be fast & hard (I was right: I just talked to Doug, and he said it was fast & hard). I went to the Quadrant for some coffee and a corn muffin, then decided to ride to the Green Cafe for brunch, called Joe but he already had something else planned.

That freaky (and not in a good way) girl Wendy was there running the show, and then Dave came in to put the finishing touches on the buzzkill ambiance... jeez, wonder how he knew I'd be there? I think the ol' GC has lost its magic for me.

so, what's new?

Morning weigh-in (Friday): 170#, 11.5% body fat
Morning weigh-in (Saturday): 170#, 14% body fat

Ran today with Dawn, a 4 mile route with "hill sprints," and we timed it: 36:57, not great but not too bad. I passed the 3 mile mark at 27 minutes, which was encouraging. This was followed by a gym workout, where we worked in crunches for the first time since my last vertigo experience, back when I went on that winter camping trip.

The rest of the day was uneventful, and now I'm going out to see/hear "Spirit Island" at Which Brew, then maybe "Sarah's Rhythm Recipe" at the Bluetone Cafe.

What about Friday? Run, work, ride (Russ & wife, Mike Arnold, Dona Long, coupla other guys I didn't know; no Doug, Lori or Brian), WB w/ Joe, then fairly early bedtime.

Morning weigh-in (Wednesday): 180.5#, 10.5% body fat
Morning weigh-in (Thursday): 177.0#, 11.5% body fat

Apparently beer and Taco Bell are very heavy... went out for a quick one Tuesday night, had two Hoegardens, then stopped at Taco Bell on the way home. Stepped on scale yesterday morning -- GAAAH! Looks like the pig passed throught the python though...

Been staying up a little too late the past few days, consequently feeling tired. I think I'll be getting to bed earlier tonight.

Laissez le Bon Temps Rouler!

Morning weigh-in: 177.5#, 11.5% body fat

"Active rest" day, ran in the morning but no evening workout. A little surfing, checking the emails, then because it's Mardi Gras tonight, I think I might go out after I get the laundry & dishes & other schtuff done.

I'm back, with news

Morning weigh-in: 177#, 12.5# body fat

Actually lost weight while on vacation -- BONUS!

Back from Stowe/Burlington, where ski & snowshoe conditions were excellent, so the "party animal" activities were cancelled -- or at least, very very subdued -- due to outdoor-activity fatigue... BTW, it was just Joe Gallagher and myself this trip, Doug bailed. To make a long story short: we had fun, but that was the expected outcome, not news. Stay tuned for more stories later in the week.

The real (& very good) news is that I'm an uncle again; my brother's wife had a baby daughter last night. More on that too, but also later in the week. It's late, I was too tired to run this morning after the long drive and late (post-midnight) homecoming, and I still have to unpack the car. I felt tired today, but I lifted after work, & felt unexpectedly good in spin class tonight.

Even so, g'night.

Just A Song Before I Go

Morning weigh-in (Wednesday): 176.5%, 12.5% body fat
Morning weigh-in (Thursday): 177.5#, 11.0% body fat

Yesterday was the Chain Gang meeting, and I was too tired to post when I got home. Got up this morning, too tired to run so blew it off. Work, spin, dinner and now I'm getting ready to head out of town for the weekend. Joe G and I are going to Burlington VT for the Mardi Gras festival, and also to do a little snowshoeing and XC skiing. We're leaving at 4:00 AM Friday, about 5 hours from now. Weather should get warm and rainy just as we arrive, so the real plan is to get drunk and toss beads to the chickalitas...

Active Rest

Morning weigh-in: 176#, 11.5% body fat

Exercise: ran this morning but nothing else, ditto for tomorrow, which is the next Chain Gang meeting and our official weigh-in.

Computer: things are running really well (I love it so far), but still no sound. I may need to get a sound card, or something.

Next up: this weekend is the Magic Hat Mardi Gras in Burlington. But first, chores & food shopping. Adios, my friend...

Galvanic Spectacle

Morning weigh-in: 176.5#, 12.5% body fat

Run, work, gym, spin, computer (XF86Config, Tux Racer, still no sound), now bed.

Been thinking about the "Superbowl boob incident." Wrong on so many levels, yadda yadda... the thing that gets me is the way the puppet show is becoming more strident, as the buttons they push have become desensitized. Transmarginal phase, extinction beyond the zero -- like shocking a dead frog's legs to make them still twitch, but needing bigger and bigger jolts as time goes by and the last life force drains out, how long will the dogs still drool for the bell after you stop feeding them? What's really funny is the way a TV can grab my attention now (after about 5 years of being TV-free) when I walk into the room where it's on, my resistance is waaaay down...

A New Toy

Morning weigh-in: 177.5#, 14% body fat

Rode this morning, did the Williams Twp ride (Gaffney Hill RD, Buttermilk Rd, Kichline & Hexkopf & Raubsville Roads, then Morgan Hill Rd back). A hard ride, but it's only 17 miles and should take me about 1:30, and it took me 2 hours today. It's still officially winter...

After the ride I went in to Brooklyn to see my grandmother, whose 89th birthday was Wednesday. Brought a cake, stayed for about two hours.

When I got home, I called my friend Paul, who got me some new computer stuff: new motherboard, Athlon 2.4 GHz CPU and 512 MB RAM, and a video card. It's like a new computer, the best out there currently, for only $360 -- you can't beat that! Of course, everything worked over his house, but now I'm having trouble here. Something to play with, but right now I have to go to bed.

BTW: crashed last night, didn't see the Kites or even go out at all. I just ran out of energy some time after dinner, went with the flow.

Saturday Blogging

Morning weigh-in: 178#, 13.5% body fat

Greg and Judy went to Which Brew last night, with their friends Dan & Katie. Kind of a surprise I guess (but of course not really) for all of us to run into each other; we had dinner at our table & they had theirs in the other room, but when we were done we (that is, Doug & Lori, Joe, Brian & myself) went to say hi & bye. I was tired and my plan was to head out for an early bedtime (I was the one pushing for the evening to end), but when the others left I ended up joining their table for another several hours of conversation & goofy bar tricks...

This morning was Coffee Works for breakfast, then another run/weights workout with Dawn, followed by laundry, drycleaning, household chores, an oil change and a haircut. Next up is a trip to Bethlehem to see the Kites at the Funhouse.

This just in: I signed up to judge an elementary school science fair. More later....

Friday Blogging

Morning weigh-in 177.5#, 11.5% body fat

Last post was written Thursday night, but phone was screwed up so I only got to post it tonight. Tonight was riding with Doug on the towpath, followed by Which Brew (well duh), dinner with Doug; we were joined by Lori, then Joe, then Brian. Surprise: Greg & Judy came in, with their friends Dan & Katie. After dinner, everyone I was with originally left, so I joined D&J and D&K. I just got in, I'm tired, now it's bedtime, goodnight.

Thursday Blogging

Morning weigh-in (Wednesday): 179#, 11.5% body fat
Morning weigh-in (Thursday): 177.5#, 13% body fat

Probably have enough weight, body fat & exercise info in here to do some decent data mining, but that's another day and another project.

I rode the towpath yesterday; it's getting very rideable again. There was some snow ("ice" might be a better term, thought the resorts would call it "packed powder"), which had decent traction and was hard enough to support me, but the dirt was spongy and soaked & had that "springtime soft" feeling. It took me two hours to ride to Bethlehem (I turned around just before the Stefko Boulevard bridge) & back.

Joe called me afterward (& after dinner), said he had some photos from the New Years Day hike, so I met him at Which Brew about 10:00. When I pulled in I saw something moving among the garbage cans down the block: it was a woman, very large and dropsically fat, who was doing an "I've fallen and can't get up." I ran over to see if she was OK, and she sort of said yes, but it was obvious she was extremely drunk, like too drunk to avoid dying of exposure in the gutter, so I called the police from WB. They came about 5 minutes later, and I pointed her out to them. A few minutes after that, we saw an ambulance go by, figure it was her. I hope she was too messed up to remember me, because even though I did her a major favor she might not see it that way...

Work & spinning today, dinner, laundry, a little light blogging, then it'll be bedtime.

Thick as a Brick

Morning weigh-in: 179#, 14.5% body fat

My tri-geek friends sometimes refer to it as a "brick" workout, where you do more than one workout in succession: bike then run, swim then whatever, etc. I used to joke that it was called "brick" because you felt like a ton of them fell on you when you did one... Well, today was a morning run, then weights and spinning. None were radical workouts, but I did the last two back-to-back, and now I feel great, maybe a little tired but it's a good tired...

Just made the best dinner I ever cooked: that pasta with wilted greens, but I also added some tuna in olive oil. Like I said, the best thing I ever ate. I have some apricots with sage and cinnamon and fresh grated ginger waiting in the fridge. Dieting makes me think about food, thinking about food makes me hungry, which makes me eat which makes me gain weight which makes me dietwhichmakesmethinkaboutfood...

My friend Doug emailed me today, a friend of his passed away. Cancer. He was pretty bummed out, & reading his email I knew exactly what he was going through. Well, time heals or so they say, but I'm still waiting.

Redemption Song (happy belated birthday, Bob)

Morning weigh-in: 179.5#, 14.5% body fat

Last night's shows were great. The first one was at Which Brew, where I caught a set of "Sarah's Rhythm Recipe," a bluesy rock band featuring jazz/blues singer Sarah Ayers. Stu and Cathy were there, and I'm starting to suspect that they've taken me under their wing, the project being to set me up with one of her friends... I had one beer and -- well, not escaped, exactly, because the girl was nice, but I did have to get to Bethlehem.

It was at the Funhouse that I saw "the Fellas," a group of college kids playing a sort of jam-band jazz: guitar/bass/drums, with sax and trumpet. They played all original instrumentals, all very danceable (more like dancing for Phish or the Dead, rather than say ska or the Specials), and there were a lot of cuties dancing. I met Joe down there, then after a while I saw Doug, then a little later I saw Eric and Kris come in. I also saw Cos's brother Jake & his girlfriend, Creepy Dave, and a few others, so there were actually more people there that I knew than back at WB. Anyway, the band was awesome, but I skipped the last set to get a somewhat early start on Sunday.

Today was pretty much the first group ride of the year. Joe & Cindy, Brian, Curt's son Matt, and Rob Goody left from Curt's house and did a 23 mile road ride. Joe & Matt were on fixed gear road bikes, Brian was on his old touring bike, and Cindy and I were on mountain bikes (unlike Cindy, I was riding slick tires though), but Rob was riding his full-suspension mountain bike, with studded tires -- can you say rolling resistance? Big heavy bike, thing rides like a pig on the road and with studded tires to boot, and he was at the front the whole time. Monster of the day award.

I wasn't fully up to snuff but I felt OK, rode at my own pace. It was very windy out, and it seemed that every climb ended with a "wind-swept hilltop" -- headwinds both ways, of course. With the upright MTB position, I felt like one big sail trying to push through the air, but the mountain bike came in handy when we hit ice or other winter road hazards... long story short, it was a good ride, though a bit on the hard side, then afterwards we went to Jack Creek for a quick dinner.

Pattern Recognition: I happened to see in the paper this article about a "cool hunter," someone who goes around the world looking for trendy new cool stuff to mass market. That was Cayce Pollard's job in William Gibson's Pattern Recognition, so it seemed pretty neat at first, in that postmodern hipster economy way, but it really wasn't all that cool of course, just a little more of the Great Rock And Roll Swindle... the guy was French, and I thought "where are the Situationists when you need them?" A little pie in the face could come in handy right now...

Anyway, that brought me to thinking about Bob Marley, whose birthday was Friday. Who he was, what he stood for, and fought and sang for, and how they're using him now to sell good times and time shares in Jamaica, mon. Well, after this kind of rehabilitation, maybe someday there will come true redemption. I hope so.

The Spew: keeping you up-to-date since 2003

Morning weigh-in: 179#, 14% body fat

I went swimming last night, which turned out to be a lot of fun. It was Doug and myself, as guests of Greg H at the Bethlehem YMCA. The setup there is pretty nice, not too big on weights or cardio machines that I could see, but they have several racquetball courts, hot tub & sauna, etc, and of course a pool. The water was chlorinated, but not too strongly.

I forgot how much of a workout swimming can be! We each did our own thing, swimming laps in the same lane -- a woman sharing our lane but "driving on the left side of the road" if you know what I mean, fled to the (empty) next lane over, after bumping heads with Greg... He was doing some specific workout, two double laps (ie 100 yards) hard, then a quick break before doing another two, over and over, while I did a bunch of laps in a crawl, then a "resting" double lap on my back, then a few more crawl, then a double lap of breast stroke, etc; Doug just did laps and worked on his form. Plenty of rest & BS breaks, the time flew by: we were there for an hour, finishing at 9:30. I'm sure I did more than a half mile -- 18 double laps -- but less than a mile. Greg did considerably more, Doug about the same as me. Afterward, we each went our separate ways -- I was meeting Joe G at Which Brew.

Before swimming I made that "pasta & wilted greens" dish, which was awesome but leaves you with a very strong garlic aura... the poolwater & subsequent shower burned it off, but after a while at WB I started to smell chlorine, then garlic again, so I called it an early night before I offended too many people. (Also, I've been thinking about the Superbowl, and am not too happy with some of the decisions I made -- don't ask -- so I think that'll be it for blowouts for a while.) Anyway, while I was there I had an Old Heathen Imperial Stout, and some black bean hummus (again with the garlic), and that seemed to whet my appetite because when I left I didn't go straight home, but to Taco Bell and got a shitload of all the wrong things... Damn you, Taco Bell!

Today I ran with Dawn, my trainer. I've been working with her for years, mainly weights which she's good at but it's not her thing; I think she's been waiting for me to break down and ask her for running advice for more than a year now! Anyway, she's helping me get ready for that 5k, pretty serious about it too, more than I am so I better get my act together...

In other news: soon I will be a godfather to my as-yet-unborn niece, but first my sister-in-law has to survive her pregnancy. She and my brother are the ones who got married in October; now they have a baby on the way, but apparently she's having a rough time, serious health issues, and she just went into the hospital. Her doctor was thinking of inducing labor early, say March 1, but is now talking (worst-case scenario) of possibly a C-section as soon as the baby can survive outside the womb... I talked to them last night on the phone: Amy's in a bit of pain but she seems to be holding up OK, and I joked with her to keep it in perspective: someday the baby will be thirteen and giving her lip! Anyway, that was my connection with the adult world for this week. (My next task: are conditions still OK for XC skiing, or should I do a road ride with Joe C and crew tomorrow instead?)

The view from the office (lunchtime, sucka!)

Morning weigh-in: 178.5#, 13% body fat

Got up and ran this morning, not so bad out that early, but when I drove to work it was getting nasty: cold rain while de-icing the car, somewhat slippery road conditions. I took 173 after I heard a traffic report of an accident on Jugtown Mountain.

Words to live by: "I'd rather have 25 degrees and snowing than 40 degrees and raining." -- Greg, in the 40 degree rain, before the Michaux race several years ago. I think he's absolutely right, and I think I'll take an invite to go swimming with Doug at Lehigh rather than ride. (On the other hand: "there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing choices," and that college poolwater did a number on my skin & sinuses at Lafayette years ago. Ahhh, just go swimming, ya wuss.)

What A Difference A Day Makes

Morning weigh-in: 178.5#, 14.5% body fat

Got up this morning and ran, despite being up late last night. (Well, midnight, late for nowadays.) I felt pretty good, and took a minute off my time: ran my 15 minute route in 14 minutes. If I can get the pace up consistently, I'll add some distance to keep the time at 15 minutes, at least for a few weeks -- I eventually want to go up to 20-30 minutes at least one or two mornings a week. That's a little into the future though.

Work: eh. Interesting day, I guess, cool projects and also John Jackson's 50th birthday. He wasn't happy when he heard that people knew about it, and was even less happy when they threw the "surprise party" ... I wasn't too happy myself, after I ate a slice of that cake. I normally try to only eat fruit, like bananas etc for snacks at work, but had a corn muffin every day this week -- and now this! The horror, the horror...

I may have been the sugar rush from the icing, or yesterday's rest day, but tonight's spin class was pretty awesome. Hard & fast, but I felt good and my heart rate was up there, between 80%-90% of max for almost half the class.

Some computer "housekeeping," a little bike work (brakes, again) then it's bedtime for me. I'll probably run tomorrow morning, but biking may be out of the question: there's a possibility of significant ice on the roads. That, and the cold rain coming down, ought to keep me inside. Yesterday's ride: shoulda, woulda, coulda...

doldrums

Morning weigh-in:179#, 12.5% body fat

Bored. Going to go for a ride maybe, do some MTB-on-road, maybe the Hellertown loop. Nothing else to say.

UPDATE: No ride. Instead, I stayed up late, cleaning out and reorganizing my Mozilla bookmarks.

Superbowl of Chili: Now it Can Be Told

Morning weigh-in: 179#, 14% body fat

Listening to WLVR. Apparently the Lehigh kids are still on vacation, so their station still rocks.

The Chili Contest: yes it rocked too. We (me, Eric, Doug & Lori, Brian, and Joe & Cos) started with a hike at Merrill Creek, where we later ran into Lee Sindet, and Karen Fox & her boyfriend Brian -- we were supposed to meet them but had parked in different lots, oh well. It was a good start to the day though, and hiking was the right choice, the trails were ruined for XC and except in one or two places the snowshoes were unnecessary. About an hour and a half of walking around and playing in the snow, and we went back to the cars, changed, and headed for Easton.

We got downtown about 11:30, and there already a lot of people there on line, but we lined up inside, where we were warm and could order beers. (Not long after we got there the line went out the door -- this is a half hour after the pub opened, and at least an hour and a half before the start of the contest -- so we lucked out.) Time flew as we hung out and people-watched, and it didn't seem too long before we were inside sampling the chili.

(A quick note: the contest is among local pubs and restaurants, judged by a panel of "experts" like local reporters & firemen or such like, and the grand prize is a top-of the-line stereo system. There is also a "People's Choice" award that people like us get to vote on. The whole thing is for charity and $5 gets you in. Beer is full price, but the chili & water are free...)

This year there were a lot more contestants than last year. Personally, I think Pearly Bakers really dropped the ball or something last year: no advance work, no advertising etc, and it showed... luckily, plenty of people showed up, and despite last year's disappointment they showed up again this year... There were probably thirty contestants, maybe a few more, and they were all good, like there was nothing there (among those I could eat: some had nuts or mushrooms) that wasn't excellent, it really was hard to pick a favorite but I liked entries from Porters and the Savory Grille best. This is probably the biggest deal in Easton, with the possible exception of Heritage Day. I saw Kelly-Jo and crew from Which Brew, and the Green Cafe crowd pushing their wares, and a ton of people out there consuming...

We ate our samples, then voted and left (I forgot to mention we hooked up with Dick Saul there), to escape the crowds and to let others get a chance. We went next door to Mothers, then up the street to Porters, then the day started catching up to all of us, so we headed home. I was asleep before the kickoff...

Checking In Before The Crash

Morning weigh-in (Sunday): 180.5#, 14% body fat
Morning weigh-in (Monday): 179#, 14.5% body fat

Going to bed in about 5 minutes but thought I'd just stop here to say that the Chili Contest was a smashing success. More on this maybe tomorrow, but right now I'm freaking exhausted and need my beauty sleep.

This weekend's theme is: spicy foods!

Morning weigh-in (Saturday): 178.5#, 13.5% body fat

I just made a spicy tempeh stir-fry, crushed red peppers plus two habaneros to help the fire take effect. Note to self: wash hands repeatedly before rubbing eyes! Tasty, but hot. Last night I had a "chutney pizza" at Which Brew, where Indian food was being prepared by a couple of regulars acting as "guest chefs." That was also good but spicy, in that spicy-Indian-food way (well duh). And of course, tomorrow is the Superbowl of Chili...

Listening to the Electronica charts over at SoundClick, but soon I'll be heading down to the ol' WB for to hear Spirit Island.

Morning weigh-in (Friday): 177#, 13.5% body fat

Wake up, run, work, eat, bike, Which Brew (Doug & Lori, Eric & Kris, Brian, Joe), goodnight.

"All Right Then, We Are Two Nations"

Morning weigh-in (Wednesday): 178#, 14.5% body fat
Morning weigh-in (Thursday):179#, 14.5% body fat

I saw a reference to John Dos Passos the other day, a quote from The Big Money in this article about the DeCSS Haiku (the author un-anonymized himself), and have been thinking about him ever since. Funny, I recognized the quote; I have that page bookmarked with photos I took from a power plant, of coal barges on the Monongahela River. Couple of my friends got long diatribes about the structure of the USA trilogy, characters, themes, literary techniques, won't repeat it here -- you're welcome!

But here's some quotes from the stream of consciousness chapter "The Camera Eye (51)." It starts like this:

at the head of the valley in the dark of the hills on the broken floor of a lurchedover cabin a man halfsits halflies propped up by an old woman two wrinkled girls that might be young chunks of coal flare in the hearth flicker in his face white and sagging as dough blacken the cavedin mouth the taut throat the belly swelled enormous with the wound he got working on the minetipple

and ends thus:

the law stares across the desk out of angry eyes his face reddens in splotches like a gobbler's neck with the strut of the power of submachineguns sawedoffshotguns teargas and vomitgas the power that can feed you or leave you to starve
sits easy at his desk his back is covered he feels strong behind him he feels the proscecutingattorney the judge an owner himself the political boss the minesuperintendent the board of directors the president of the utility the manipulator of the holdingcompany
he lifts his hand towards the telephone
the deputies crowd in the door
we have only words against

...the next chapter is called "Power Superpower;" it's a satirical biography of Edison's assistant Samuel Insull.

A New Toy

Morning weigh-in: 179#, 14% body fat

Cold again this morning, but the running is coming along -- tomorrow will be tougher, we'll see how 6"-10" of snow affects things.

My new toy: I got a 21" monitor today for $25, and the deal included an Intergraph computer, keyboard, and power strip, all (supposedly) in good working order. No OS/applications, HD is supposed to be wiped clean. If it snows hard enough tonight to keep me home tomorrow I'll look at it then; I've been surfing since I got home and there's no more time tonight.

By the way, WLVR is great.

UPDATE: Note that this is a late night entry for Tuesday, rather than early Wednesday...

Pynchon, Pynchon, Pynchon

Morning weigh-in: 180.5#, 15.5% body fat

Looks like tomorrow will be my first real running test: it'll probably be drizzling in the morning, we'll see how things work out in those circumstances. This mornig it was snowing, but not much -- still very cold though, single digits before the sun comes up.

Pretty good day yesterday, by the way: brunch was excellent at the Green Cafe, though the place was as chilly as ever. The hike was good as well, though we got such a late start -- we being myself, Joe, Cos, and Daaaaave -- that we didn't bother to go all the way to the Pinnacle, just up "the initial" and down "the Missy," these names being what we called the first climb (of many) and the final downhill (named in honor of downhill racer Missy Giove), way back in 1995 & 1996, when the Chain Gang did hill training there on Wednesday nights. I can't believe that I still know the place as well as I do, after that many years...

Anyway, Joe had rented "Once Upon A Time in Mexico," which is a great move but the third in a trilogy. Turns out Cos has not only cable (unlike either Joe or myself), but a copy of "El Mariachi," the first one, on VCR. So, I grabbed a few of those holiday brews still lying around, plus a little hummos & pita, and they cooked a dinner, and we caught "The Simpsons," where Thomas Pynchon played himself with a paper bag over his head. Now that I've seen him, I'd know him anywhere... Then came "El Mariachi." Just as stylized as "Once Upon A Time in Mexico," though with poorer production values, and in Spanish with English subtitles. It was like watching folklore being invented, or maybe folk motifs being turned into a movie.

By the way, Joe seems to think he's in a battle for my soul, or at least my stomach. I borrowed a vegan book from him a week or two ago, he's all hyped up about my healthier eating habits, and he took great offense to a recent disparaging remark by Brian about my dieting... yesterday was vegan brunch, vegan dinner, I even brought over organic vegan snacks and organic beer... I didn't have the heart to tell him I'd had a turkey sandwich before coming over.

That was yesterday. Today was work, then spinning (this was my fourth consecutive Monday, I'm so proud), now a little pre-snowstorm shopping, and then to bed. Yo, later.

Morning weigh-in:180.0#, 15.5% body fat

Didn't got to the movie last night: Route 33, the main road north, was closed (don't know why) and alternates would have taken me too long. So, I phoned in my regrets and went to Which Brew (well duh!), to see A Pair of Armadillos (aka the Aardvarks). The original Armadillos were a good bar band that broke up a while ago, and this duo is a remnant of the original; I at least partly expected a trio, since this dude Jason, a friend of my old next door neighbor Joe McK, had been playing drums with them but I guess not. I also expected Joe G to show up at 8:00, but it turns out he fell asleep and never made it out...

Breakfast eaten, laundry and dishwasher scrubbing away, and I'm heading to Bethlehem. Meeting Joe & Cos at the Green Cafe for a little brunch, then heading up to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary for a hike.

an approaching high tide

...waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Morning weigh-in: 178.5#, 14% body fat

Really cool Harper's, but I went out last night anyway; Joe G was alread on his way to Which Brew so I said I'd meet him there. The place was mobbed, lots & lots of cuties and me with a bulbous red nose... Hung out with Joe and "Two Brew Stu," also talked with Jackie S for a bit, couldn't catch Bill's attention, tell him we're going to Vermont. Not much chance for talking anyway, Three Monks were playing and things were loud. Their sound has really come together.

Anyway speaking of things coming together: every weekend lately has been great, been seeing a lot of great bands, work is good, ditto reading/surfing, I'm losing weight and my body feels like it's firing on all cylinders for the first time in a while (it likes sloth, but does better with something difficult to chew on), things are starting to come together... so when when and how will they all come apart again?

Going to see a movie tonight, In America up at the coffee-house-cum-movie-theater in Stroudsburg. I hope I don't crash on the way...

One more thing: I saw an ad, "Free to Good Home" for a black lab, 5 years old and rescued from an abusive situation (the new owner is moving & can't keep him). I wish I could have a dog.

Asthma Barbie Sez "Breathing ice is hard!"

Morning weigh-in: 179.0#, 13% body fat

Jeebus, it was cold this morning. Ran a little further than yesterday (which was further than the day before), took 12 minutes. A little further and I think I'll have my distance dialed in -- I want to run 15 minutes every weekday morning. Things started out OK, but after a while I thought I was going to puke from respiratory distress. Work week is over, so now I'm getting to go back out for my Friday bike ride. It's about 14 degrees and the snow is a serious nuisance, so we'll see how long I stay out there. It goes without saying that I'm going alone...

The dry air at work (& cold air everywhere) has been irritating my nose, I've been using vaseline to keep things from drying out too bad, and last night I started to get "snot burn" around my left nostril (or maybe it's frostbite, heh heh): nasty, red, swollen & painful, I think I'll be staying in tonight. Joe called, wondered what I was doing and I told him I didn't "feel pretty;" he said "just put some foundation on it." A real riot, that Joe. I could put lipstick on it, make it less red...

Anyway, the new Harper's is here, with the usual jeremiads (Medicare, "The Oil We Eat"), but also an article about Centralia -- I once read somewhere that the town will probably burn for another thousand years. Anyway, good night to stay in.

A Lively Meeting

Morning weigh-in: 179.0#, 13% body fat, obsession index approaching 105%

I guess great minds think alike -- or is it just that fools seldom differ?

At our meeting last night, most Chain Gang members opted in to a weight loss challenge we called "lose the flab for Moab," though not everyone is going to Moab this year, and you don't have to be going to join the challenge... Joe & Bob both had scales (we went with Joe's as the official one, after much debate), we paid $10 into a pot and weighed in as well as measured our heights. The formula is this: if your BMI is above 25, your target is the greater of either 95% your current weight, or the weight that gives you a BMI of 25. For those with a BMI below 25, the target weight is 97% of your current weight. (Those with a BMI below 20 were ineligible to participate.)

I'm not sure how you win though. It's either "winner take all" for the first person reaching their target, or the pot is split between all those who reach their targets by a certain date -- say, the meeting before Moab, which would be the March meeting because the trip is in the first week of April. All I really know is that Cindy now has my $10.

Things got pretty raucus as we all weighed in, checked our heights, and then made up a spreadsheet with the data and our target weights. Really, just one of several lively things at the meeting; I think the year is off to a good start.

So anyway, I got up this morning and ran, same time as yesterday but I ran a little further, which is good but I wanted to have the same pace and take longer... Took a spin class after work, then was dinner, now blogging and soon to bed. Tomorrow night I'm riding the towpath, then Three Monks are playing at Which Brew, & I want to make the most of my night out since I don't think there'll be too many more, at least until I win my money back...

a new thing, crashing through

Morning weigh-in: 179.5#, 14% body fat. woo-hoo!

Got up this morning at the early time, and ran. Only 10 minutes because this is an "acclimation period," and I wanted to leave room for bug fixes (note to self: wear a hat), but I was out there. Even with the early rise I managed to get to work late -- the sun glare between Exits 3 and 6 has I-78 pretty much stopped dead every morning. Another week or two and the sun will be up early enough for me to avoid this.

Anyway, once in work I see an email from the IT department, selling old computers & monitors: $25 gets you either a 17" or 19" monitor, with free computer plus maybe a keyboard (no mice) included. So I got one. I talked to a friend & he said the 'puters are old & low end (166 MHz) but the monitors are OK. Dual screen on my main computer, with backup server running maybe Slackware...

Back to work.

Another One Of Those Days

Morning weigh-in: 181#, 13.5% body fat

Yesterday, continued: Got home from work, ate a little something then went to spin class, which I had a lot of trouble getting motivated for, and which may have been a mistake (heart rate wouldn't go very high, felt tired), but it felt good to go anyway, and I really didn't push too hard, so OK whatever. Got home, decided to cook some couscous, and managed to spill an entire box of it on the floor (before you cook it, the stuff is like sand), and it got everywhere...

Today I got up late again. The "earlier rise acclimation plan" isn't really working out; I got up at 6:00, but went back to bed until 7:05. Great dreams though, between the alarm & the actual wake-up: yesterday I was in the apartment building (the narrow one with the lobby and the internal balconies) in dream-Easton, and this morning I was down by a river that looked like the Delaware, but was the Leimgruber's backyard, though it also had a Which Brew logo on one of the trees.

I don't recall thinking of the Leimgrubers in years. Lenny and Joanne, and Jennifer, and Steven. They were our next door neighbors in Englishtown until they moved, and Joanne (the mother) was my mom's best friend. She passed away from brain cancer many years ago. They were younger than my parents, and Joanne kind of treated me as a kid brother; she also gave me old back issues of Scientific American from her real kid brother... Their daughter Jennifer is exactly thirty years younger than my mom, a coincidence that was always good for a few chuckles. (Strangely enough, Brian Hahl's mom also has the same birthday as my mom.)

Anyway, off to the gym. Tomorrow is the first attempt at "early rise plus running," but otherwise it's a rest day because of the Chain Gang meeting.

UPDATE: Blew off the gym tonight.

One of those days

Morning weigh-in: 181.5#, 14% body fat

Gaaah, setbacks on multiple fronts!! Well, "slipping is crash's law" as Emily Dickenson sez, and I did a little backsliding yesterday: beer and cheese at the Beef Baron, then more beer at Porters (where I watched the aftermath of the Eagles game live from Philly), then up late surfing and answering emails. I also set my alarm a half hour early, so I'd get used to it (hubris: I plan to use the time to jog before work).

So, this morning: I get up at the new time, turn off the alarm, go back to sleep, get up for real at 7:15 -- 45 minutes late, 15 minutes before I have to be out the door -- so there's no time for healthy breakfast at home, and the scale tells me a sorry tale...

Well, tonight is Colette's spin class, and I can eat a healthy dinner and go to bed a little early, hope springs eternal.

Recommendo: "The Triplets of Belleville"

Morning weigh-in: 180#, 14% body fat

Saw that movie last night, I highly recommend it if it plays near you. Kind of funny, it started as a "cartoon in a cartoon," and in there were cameo appearances by Django Reinhardt (speak of the devil!) and Josephine Baker... anyway, great movie.

I went riding this morning, over at Jordan Park with Joe, Doug and Eric. We were supposed to meet at 1:00 but it got pushed up to noon. ( I was busy sleeping in when the call came -- doh!) Since it snowed all last night and through this afternoon -- wet, heavy stuff, 6" or more -- the riding was a real workout. It probably would have been frustrating if it wasn't supposed to just be stupid fun, which it was so I had a blast. Then again (and unlike Joe and Doug) my bike functioned flawlessly, no mechanicals. Afterwards I went with Joe and Doug to the Beef Baron, grilled cheese and a Stoudt's Winter Ale.

Next up: I think I'll stop in Porters while laundry is drying, see if anyone's there and if the Eagles game is on (if the game's not already over). And then to bed.

by the sea by the sea

Morning weigh in (Friday): 180#, 13% body fat
Morning weigh-in (Saturday): 179.5#, 14% body fat

Comments are back up!

Interesting day at work yesterday, things moved pretty quickly; also, a number of retirees visited because the department had a belated holiday luncheon -- I blew it off of course, & Dan and I were pretty much the only two Grinches who didn't go... good to see some old faces though, hear they're doing OK.

Rode the towpath last night, but only to the boat launch outside Freemansburg (still took me two hours because of the snow), then had dinner & a few beers at Which Brew, where it was literally standing room only because Duende was playing. Again, they were good but only really shined later in the evening. They ended with my two favorite songs: "The Unauthorized Biography of Django Reinhardt" and "West Virginia." The last one reminds me of Easton (especially the Easton I dream about, partially in ruins and full of alleys and secret passages), though being about WV is pretty cool too. Lotsa pub people there that I knew (Stu & Kathy, Ed, the Kneller brothers, Carole & Steve who now live near me), as well as Brian and Joe G and Creepy Dave. Anyway, a good night.

The usual selfish day today: Coffee Works, then gym, then shopping/chores. Ran into Violetta at Nature's Way (she works there, after all), and she started talking about an Alaskan adventure this summer, then that girl Sarah started saying how she was also going to Alaska and I said "Two words: Alexander Supertramp." They had no idea what I was talking about so I told them about Into the Wild, the book by Jim Krakauer about the life and death of Chris "Alexander Supertramp" McCandless. They both said they'd be careful...

That got me thinking about the Salton Sea, which I now can't stop thinking about, or get "By the sea, by the sea, by the beautiful sea" out of my head, though from all accounts the Salton Sea is anything but beautiful. For a while, the McCandless/Salton connections kept coming up, all sorts of coincidences, six degrees of separation etc: skateboard movies, Outside articles, the movie of the same name, etc. Really, just another part of my dream-Easton.

Anyway, meeting friends at the 19th Street Theater in Allentown to see "The Triplets of Belleville," & will probably make plans there to ride either Jordan or South Mountain tomorrow. Outta here...

by the sea by the
see bye beautiful

First Milestone

Morning weigh-in: 179.5#, 15.5% body fat Under 180 lbs! woo-hoo!!

I sort of worry about that number though; I've been losing about a pound a day since the weekend and I expected to be running about a pound a week. I figure two pounds a week is about the absolute maximum safe loss rate, so I may be in trouble of some kind. On the other hand, it may just be water loss, or "pulling the slack out of the rope," the first few easy pounds... I guess I'd better keep an eye on it, but in the meantime I'll take the win.

It snowed last nite, maybe six inches but because of the cold it was very light stuff. Traffic was bad in the morning but not too bad, especially considering that PennDOT said it was too cold to salt the roads. Snow day, light traffic made for a pleasant drive home (only I didn't go straight home) since the roads were in good shape by then.

Exercise: I took Kim H's spin class today after work -- less fun and much tougher than Colette's. She's not big on long recoveries, and really likes standing, and with less resistance than I'd normally prefer. I got my money's worth today.

And that's what's happening. Good night and have a pleasant tomorrow.

Light blogging ahead

Morning weigh-in: 180.5#, 13.5% body fat

Ten degrees and snowing tonight, so instead of riding (I planned to do a road ride) I put new fluid in the MTB's brakes. Hopefully, the seals just had temporary trouble with the cold weather, but I'll be calling Hope Technologies tomorrow, see what they say and maybe order new levers & whatnot. (Judging by my weight, maybe a rest day was called for anyway.) Tomorrow is a spinning class, Friday is a towpath ride, Saturday is the gym plus running, and Sunday may be another ride hopefully, then back to spinning on Monday. Funny, I haven't seen either of them in the longest time, but Colette teaches the Monday spin class, and Kim Hess teaches the Thursday class. Old Chain Gangsters don't even fade away, they keep popping out of the woodwork to kick my butt...

Haven't made this in a while, but I had tuna "aglio ed olio" for dinner tonight. Another stinky but very filling meal. It's basically the same as the Wilted Greens recipe, except you use a can of tuna in olive oil instead of the mixed greens.

I'm running out of things to talk about, really reaching so I think the daily spew may once again become less frequent, at least until I have more to say. I think I'll go for a walk in the snow, then hit the sack.

Antarctica Starts Here

Morning weigh-in: 180.5#, 13.5% body fat (looks like a hydration issue, better drink more water)

Some snow squalls came through today and the temperature plunged, should be like this for the rest of the week. On the exercise front, I took a rest day: forgot my gym bag again this AM, and it's hard to come home, get my stuff and drag myself back out. Rest was probably a good idea anyway, I was feeling a little tired -- a-and maybe I only thought I forgot the bag, eh?

Instead of the gym, I did a whole lot of nothing: mostly played with the computer, surfed; dinner was chick peas & potatoes in lemon-tahini curry, with rice because I'm out of barley. (This is one of those simple, tasty meals that leaves you bloated, smelly and satisfied for hours...)

In Memory of Mike

1993-09-JimThorpe1.jpg

Morning weigh-in: 181.5#, 15% body fat (not bad, considering it was a "bad behavior" weekend)

Work, spinning (tougher tonight than last week, but I was tired), bike brakes may need new parts, yadda yadda, here's what I've really been up to: this is a photo album I'm putting together for my friend Mike's fiancee, shots I had of various bike/outdoorsy things from the early nineties plus some photos my brother sent me. (That's a photo of him before a ride in Jim Thorpe, September of 1993. Mike passed away in December, here's a recent post about him.)

This just started out as me putting some photos on a disk, but one of my (more minor) pet peeves is finding old photos that no one can answer questions about, so I thought I'd include comments to make them understandable 20 years from now, and so I thought web pages would be a good way to go even if it ends up on a disk, then I thought I'd make an index/thumbnail page, then I decided write a script to automate the process, a little finger exercise...

In other words, the project snowballed, and the thing I was really doing (put pictures on a disk) got pushed to the background, but I now have most of it in rudimentary form, ready to be polished and finished. Take a look, let me know what you think (whoever you may be) and try my comments link at the bottom of the post... Personally, I'm a little disappointed. I wish I had more photos, and wish I could say more about each.

UPDATE: I get my comment capability via BlogSpeak, and they're in some dispute with their own host, so comments are down for now, oh well... by the way, I won't be keeping the photo album online for too too long, so if you got here via permalink don't be surprised if it's broken.

UPDATE #2: Comments are back up, thanks to HaloScan.

Busy Busy Busy

Well, I got my new eyeglasses: two pairs, very different styles from what I'm used to and and also different from each other. Props to Doug, Lori & Kris for the invaluable assistance. We went for dinner at Lobaido's in Allentown while they filled my prescription, and that's where Eric met us -- he worked late until Kris called and told him we were done shopping. The food was excellent as always. I got something called Pollo Sorrentino, which was breaded chicken and eggplant parmigiana with some pasta; couldn't tell you now what anyone else had, I was a little preoccupied... I think almost all the best restaurants in the Lehigh Valley are in Allentown, and they're like Lobiado's: little holes-in-the-wall scattered through Allentown's neighborhoods, and almost without exception they're BYO -- the big exception being Cannons, the "best dive bar in America."

Anyway, Lobaidos has fantastic food, especially their salad, but they also have homemade ice cream and I was looking forward to some cherry vanilla, but time was pressing -- I had to pick up the glasses before they closed. I was planning to pay for dinner as a thank-you gesture but they refused, in fact made me leave before the bill or I'd miss the mall closing. I'll get even with them I swear....

I went out again after I got home, basically the same drill as Friday but without the Mad Elf. I stopped in at Which Brew and caught the last set of the Skulldiggers and hung out with Heath and Hans Kneller, two brothers I know mainly from Which Brew, but I know they're VMB members and they ride and someday (hopefully it'll be warmer) we'll get in a ride or two together. They know the mandolin player in the band, which was laying down some really good Dead-style bluegrass. Which Brew closes at midnight, so when the party ended we all trooped over to Porters to catch the last set of Duende, an awesome duo that leans towards "traditional music." (The girl bartends occasionaly at -- you guessed it -- Which Brew.) I've seen them before and they're good, but last night they just blew me away. I think they need a long time to come to a focus, and seeing them early in the evening (like before midnight at Which Brew) doesn't show them in their best light... They also had a young and crunchier crowd, real rowdy and appreciative, which helped fire things up.

One beer fewer than Friday, but a much later night and I felt like sleeping in but Joe and I had plans to ride Kittatinny Valley State Park in NJ. Joe must have run into Dave "Creepy Guy" somewhere last night & told him about the ride, and brought him along. Good ride though, until my rear brake lever crapped out, but even then it was still pretty good.

Think I'll go fix my brake lever. Goodnight.

Beer Has Calories?

(Morning weigh-in: 181.5#, 15% body fat)

Rode last night, not that bad though I had some respiratory issues, but it sure was cold. I was supposed to hook up with Joe but he went to Mother's downtown earlier in the evening and "peaked early," and by the time I finished my ride, he was back home in Bethlehem. So, I went over to Which Brew, had a Troegs Mad Elf and a Delerium Tremens (both in 10-oz snifters, I'm such a beer snob), then drifted across the street to Porters to catch a set or so of Leather and Lace, an acoustic duo that I like. Unfortunately I got there just after their first set ended. (I caught up with a bunch of people there though, whom I saw earlier at WB and told about the show, and who'd hurried over to catch the first set.) A Troegs Oatmeal Stout and a Rogue Yellow Snow took me thru the second set so I drifted on home... For some reason I woke up this morning a little under the weather, but I got moving; first to the coffee shop, then to the gym -- I'm starting the seasonal switch from strength to endurance training.

My next task today (other than haircut/drycleaning/groceries) is to get new eyeglasses. Many of my friends were ecstatic when I told them I was thinking of getting new ones (the ones I have aren't exactly stylish), and Doug said he and Lori would help me pick a good pair. I'm meeting them, and also Kris Rigler, at the Lehigh Valley Mall to make it finally happen -- if we find a good pair today I'm buyng them dinner.

a little experiment

(Morning weigh-in: 182#, 15% body fat, obsession index near 100%.)

No exercise today, I took the day off. I've got a handle on the exercise, and I'm coming to grips with the nutrition thing, but I still need to get my act together when it comes to rest and recovery. (Actually, I went to the gym after work, and realized I forgot to pack my gym bag this morning, but still.) More rest is in the agenda though. Going to be hitting the sack early tonight -- for me -- but I thought I'd play around here first. I have a ton of unused space available to me from my ISP for a personal web page, thought I'd start putting it to some good use:

Here's a shot of Doug (on the right) and me at Weyerbacher, Halloween 1999 I as far as I can remember. We started out from my place on bikes, or was that the year before... uh, now I can't remember...

Anyway, just putting this up to see how it works.

Wednesday, January 07, 2004

I was supposed to go for a ride after work, but managed to procrastinate until about 8:30, then it took me another 45 minutes or so to get to the point where I was actually on the saddle and rolling. Rode the towpath to just before Freemansburg & back. I was so bundled up (temps in the teens, major wind chill) and it was so windy that I didn't move very fast, got home around 11:00.

yesterday, continued

Morning weigh-in: 183 lbs, 15% body fat. So things are going my way...

One thing I didn't mention yesterday: I saw a Virtual Pubbster at my gym yesterday, the girl who carpooled with Joe G and me up to Burlington two years ago, and chewed our ears off all the way up with tales of woe. Outdoorsy girl, but she recently joined the gym because, like she said, she has some New Years resolutions of her own...

She's been dating the singer from Endless Mountain (local bluegrass band) and seems much happier now, life is good again ("be like the squirrel, girl"). Anyway, it was a strange coincidence, since I almost never run into these people outside of a Virtual Pub context, and I'd just joined that band's mailing list the night before. I guess it's a small world after all.

Recipe for Disaster

One of the girls in the Chain Gang is a real homemaker, very into crafts, cooking etc. She thought it would be a good idea if we all contributed recipes and made a Chain Gang cookbook -- after all, our unofficial motto is "an eating club with a biking problem." Nothing's been done about it yet, so I posted a recipe on our mailing list, "Fettuccine and Wilted Greens in Olive Oil and Garlic," which is a vegan version of the dish that got Joe, Doug and myself kicked out of the Black Bread Cafe (in Jim Thorpe) a few years ago.

The story: Joe (who's vegan, and rather strict about it), Doug (vegetarian, not so strict) and I rode in Jim Thorpe, and afterward decided to get some food in town. I'd been to the Black Bread Cafe once or twice before and liked it, and I think Doug & his wife (or was it Joe & Cindy?) ate there a few times as well; it's a somewhat upscale place (though "precious" may be a better term) with really good food. Joe was a little skeptical when we suggested it, but that's where we ended up. I forget what Doug ordered, but Joe got something like "pasta & wilted greens" which came with a garlic sauce -- this was the only thing on the menu he could order besides salad, and he made a point of telling the waitress up front that he couldn't eat meat or animal products, milk etc, before ordering (like I do with food allergies). I ordered the same thing as Joe, plus the black bean hummos appetizer.

Doug and I are pigging out on our appetizers while Joe sits there hungry, and then our meal comes out, all fancy and garnished -- with grated parmesan cheese. Joe stares at it for a second in disbelief, then asks the waitress to take it back and get him some without the cheese. She comes out with a new plate, and Joe starts eating, but stops because the sauce was made with butter. Doug and I are still stuffing ourselves, but I'm starting to sense trouble... Joe gets the waitress to take his second plate back, hopefully to get some non-butter-based sauce.

About a minute later, out comes the chef, all decked out in his chef uniform -- he might even have had one of those hats, I don't remember -- and he starts out jocular but you can see he's pissed. (By the way, there's a framed article on the wall, complete with photo, about how wonderful and upscale-french-cuisine-savvy our new friend is.) He demands to know what's wrong, Joe starts telling him, he gets all testy, which ticks off Doug who fires a few zingers, and tempers are mounting, and finally Chef Jaques says "Well, what do you expect me to do, make a whole new batch?"

Joe says "Uh, please?" and that proves the straw that brakes the camel's back.

Chef starts yelling "Get out! Get out of my restaurant!" We tried to pay, but he was like "No! Get out NOW!!" So we left. Coward that I am, I was dying of embarrassment the whole time, but as soon as we were outside we all burst out laughing and ran away down the street. We just got a $90 meal for nothing, though Joe was still hungry...

I've never been back, though I hear they have a new chef.

Anyway, here's a version that'll please just about everyone, with one possible exception:

Fettuccine and Wilted Greens in Garlic and Oil

Ingredients:
Light olive oil, suitable for cooking
A jar of minced garlic in olive oil, or you can mince your own, several cloves worth
A box of fettuccine, or whatever pasta you like
A bag of mesclin-style salad mix (w/ baby spinach, chard, radicchio, arugula etc)

Pour maybe 1/4 inch of oil into a frying pan and put a couple of spoonfuls of minced garlic in it (amount varies according to taste -- I like a lot). Start heating the oil on low/medium flame, stirring constantly, and start the water for the pasta.

Keep cooking the oil, stirring often and taking care not to burn the garlic, while the pasta cooks. When the pasta is ready, drain it and set it aside.

Toss several handfuls of the mixed greens in the oil (way more than you think you'll need, since they'll shrink when they wilt), and turn the heat up a bit. Stir everything around and let the greens wilt, then pour greens/garlic/oil over the pasta and stir it all together.

This makes enough for two meals for me, your mileage may vary. Enjoy!

The Party's Over

Back to work today. But, instead of being stuck in a long drawn out boring day, I walked straight into an emergency! And it wasn't my fault! Dealing with a series of tube leaks in a header we supplied, meetings, research etc, took up the morning, then in the afternoon I started on the (rush) job that I'm supposed to be on. Union meeting at 4:00, the day just flew by...

Went to the gym after work. Colette, a riding friend from way back, has just started teaching spinning classes, and also switched to my gym, and has been bugging me to check out her class (I told her "after the new year"). I haven't done a spin class in years (and didn't particularly enjoy them then), but I found myself actually surprised by how much I liked her class. Well, Colette's always been pretty cool, so she's got herself a convert.

Today was also "Mug Night" at Which Brew: dinner discounts for Mug Club members on the first Monday of the month. They're normally closed Mondays, but the local PBA uses Which Brew for their monthly meeting, so they open for members as well. Typical Mug Club crowd; I met Brian there for dinner. He'd just come from his gym, where Colette used to work & convinced him to join, before she quit to teach where I go so he wasn't all that happy to hear my story... I had pork and saurkraut (traditional New Years Day dish hereabouts) and a Lancaster Milk Stout to wash it down.

And that was the end of my holiday... in the immortal words of Samuel Pepys, "and so to bed."

Sunday, January 04, 2004

Well, after about half a week of my new diet/exercise resolutions, I'm up two pounds... I know the conventional wisdom is not to be too obsessive about the scale (it's not even that accurate), but the "fat is converting to muscle so you're really getting more slender & in better shape even if the weight goes up" adage doesn't really hold all that much water for me: I have reasonably good muscle tone, not much intramuscular fat -- mostly I just have a serious inner tube, but this is the ominous "syndrome X" situation -- so there's not much "gain muscle to lose fat" opportunity. Still, if the scale doesn't start telling me what I want to hear soon, I'm going to throw it out the window. In other fitness news, I finally got my HRM watch battery replaced (it's only been about a year). My resting heart rate is currently 54 bpm.

One small reason why the weight might have gone up: Went to a co-worker Christmas party last night in Parsippany (my friend Vito, who retired about a year ago). This was the party that got rescheduled from the night of the big snowstorm, just before Christmas. For dinner they had pizza, antipasto, filet mignon, yams, potatoes, onions, broccoli casserole (Vito's wife & daughter are vegetarian, as is Jay Chandran, who I hadn't seen since he retired), a spiral ham (in case anyone's afraid of Mad Cow), homemade wine, sausage & peppers (Pat Gargone said he liked them, last Christmas), and several different pies for dessert. Good time and an unbelievable spread, but so much for my resolutions -- I'm surprised I can even move this morning!

We (Chain Gang) were supposed to go ride at Allamuchy this morning but it's raining and cold. Maybe a "Cold Mountain" matinee instead?

Friday, January 02, 2004

By the way, here are my New Year's Resolutions (actually, one resolution in two parts, and two goals to make it palatable): I resolve to live healthier, by eating better and exercising more regularly, including adding running to my regimen. My goals are to lose 14 lbs (get down to 170#) by late March or early April, and to run a 5k about the same time. I want to run the 5k within 25 minutes, but will be happy with anything under 30. (I'd really like to get down to maybe 165 by June, but I'm not sure about how that fits with my larger Lean Body Mass. My days of being 145 lbs are long over...)

How will I do it? Not sure yet. I think I have enough diet info to eat healthy if I'd just do it, but I may want to follow a specific diet like the "Fit or Fat Target Diet" or something along those lines. We'll see, but in the meantime there's the exercise: I've been pretty slack over the last year or so, and I think I'll have to get kind of regimented about it for a while. But the good news is, my old friend Colette is now teaching spin classes at my gym on Monday nights, so I'll go for that workout, hit the towpath maybe once or twice during the week, then hit the gym for running/lifting Saturday and one more day during the week, and something outdoors, aerobic and daylong on Sunday -- I should be sick of it by February!!

I think that ought-four is going to be a good year...

A quick recap: Christmas was good, didn't go anywhere though (XC snow/weather conditions were rumored to be shitty in VT). A couple of good rides here and there, some running (gahh!), some good parties including the Chain Gang Xmas dinner (Chinese food), Doug & Lori's impromptu bash, and Greg & Judy's 2nd Annual New Year's Eve Blowout -- very subdued compared to last year, where we all ended up on Greg's boat trailer as he drove us around his lawn, but by all other, normal standards, an excellent party -- then yesterday's traditional New Year's Day hike. Myself, Doug & Lori, Brian, Bob & Karen, Joe & Cindy, and Joe and Cos, up Tammany Mountain (Delaware Water Gap) to the lookouts, then down the back way & along Dunnfield Creek, two hours or so.

I haven't been blogging here for a while, because there has been one event that would have to go here, and I found it a little hard to talk or think about for a while... my friend Mike Kucher passed away in his sleep on December 6th.

Mike had been a friend since grade school: he was a year younger than me, my brother Kevin's age and one of several of Kevin's friends that I sort of glommed onto. Mike was a litle closer than most though, he was practically a member of our family.

He'd gone into the Navy just out of high school, and contracted Hodgkins Disease (aka leukemia) while serving, so ended up with a medical discharge, and disability, and treatment at Walter Reed. Remission for a few years, then another bout with Hodgkins, then remission again, then (years later, but still years ago) throat cancer... he took a real beating from that (chemo, radiation, removal of part of his jaw and throat), but two years ago last summer we'd had a party for him because he'd been cancer-free for five years. He'd been through hell & obviously would never be the same -- he had no saliva glands, and with half his throat gone he had to re-learn how to swallow etc -- but he'd made it, he survived and won and the rest would be gravy.

Like with most of my high school / Manalapan friends we had already been drifting apart for a while by the time of that party, so I wasn't really aware of any illness or trouble, but at Kevin's wedding this October he was extremely thin, and had difficulty eating or even moving his arms. He put a brave face on it (as usual) but his fiancee told me that the radiation treatments, years earlier, had caused nerve damage which was only now manifesting itself. (Apparently his inability to eat was also causing underweight/malnutrition problems; he'd been in the hospital for pneumonia and had a feeding tube inserted in his chest.) Even with all that, when my mom called to tell me it took me completely by surprise. That was Saturday evening, the 6th. The wake (closed coffin) was the next Tuesday night, and the funeral was Thursday. The wake wasn't too hard (standing room only, many people I hadn't seen in years, you can almost forget why you're there), but the funeral was way rougher than I expected.

Well, rest in peace Mike. You deserved better in this world and didn't get it; maybe we'll meet again in a better one.

Back from Thanksgiving dinner at Mom & Dad's. More on that maybe but first I thought I'd mention two recent things I read.

The first, several weeks ago was about the mythology developed by homeless kids in Miami. It was several years old, and possibly was a hoax but the story was compelling and disturbing. You can read it here.

The other was in Dirt Rag magazine, and was the winner of their reader-submitted story contest. It was about racism, alcoholism, death, friendship, courage and the Portal Trail on Poison Spider Mesa. I can't get it out of my head. (Nothing online that I saw, you'll have to buy the issue.)

The Joe man is back...
-- Big Black, "Bazooka Joe"

Sunday night, and I actually have enough energy left over to write here...

Last weekend I went camping, on a backpacking trip with my friend Joe. He's a natural athlete and avid outdoorsman, but last December he blew out his knee so we haven't done much outdoor stuff -- and no riding at all -- since then. Anyway, he'd been bugging me to do a backpacking trip for a few years, even convincing me to get a really good backpack (which has been gathering dust ever since), and his knee has rehabilitated enough to give it some exercise, so we decided to finally get in a hiking trip. We went to a place in the Poconos called the Thunder Swamp Trail System, which can be wet, but is relatively flat and non-technical, a fairly easy trail as these things go...

It was the hardest three days of my life. The trails were rocky in places -- it is Pennsylvania -- but not all that difficult; it was just that I was totally out of my element, and not used to walking with a pack (weight: 40 pounds) on my back. Joe also took care of the food, and he's a militant "organic food only" vegan and thinks I eat too much anyway -- we were starving ourselves by my standards!! Not enough calories as far as I was concerned, which might have contributed to the fatigue, but luckily he's a good cook and the stuff we did eat was tasty. All told, we hiked 15 miles or so: 3 on friday afternoon, and about six each on Saturday and Sunday. Considering that he did the entire 29 mile trail with his old girlfriend, on a 3-day weekend a few years back, it was a a woefully disappointing performance -- and we (I) couldn't blame his knee, since he managed to be ahead and constantly waiting for me... I was totally whooped. I basically blew off all exercise for the rest of the week, and pretty much blew off everything Sunday and Monday nights except sleep. My legs, especially the little stabilizer muscles, were killing me through Wednesday. Great weather though, flurrys on Friday, sunny and not too chilly for the weekend.

Thursday was a trip to Linden, NJ to a job site. Nothing special, they just wanted a few more pairs of eyeballs going over a unit problem area. Some questionable piping (small lines, like 1" pipe or less), problems with supports, everything was under control without my two cents but it was a day out of the office, though Linden ain't exactly the Bahamas.

Friday was a late-night towpath ride, then a quick trip to Which Brew to see Endless Mountain, that bluegrass band.

Saturday: back to hanging out with Joe in the woods, this time on bikes. Beth & Kevin McGatha have an annual "Chili Ride," which starts with a ride at Allamuchy and ends at their house with a party, bonfire and chili cook-off. Great time, rode with Lauren Detoro who I haven't seen in a while (jeez! when did she start smoking?), and a bunch of other people I don't really know except through Beth. Kevin didn't ride -- old motocross injuries finally caught up with him, and he's also recovering from knee surgery, so he and Joe talked knee braces and ACL tissue replacement... We left about 7:00 and raced back to Easton to see the George Bush "Liar Liar Pants on Fire" effigy ride in and park at Center Square. About eighty self-conscious "protesters," and one pro-Bush heckler (give him credit, he wasn't shy) for them to argue with. (In the paper this morning, it was a "white hot debate.") I owed Joe dinner for doing the food last week, so it was my treat at Touch of Thai, then another early bedtime for me.

Today was yet another Joe day: myself, Joe, and his ex-girlfriend, Cosmia -- and he just broke up with that non-biking girl he's been dating since the knee, hmmmm... We went up to Jim Thorpe, rode the singletrack out in the strip mines for a few hours (hard, technical riding, lots of fun), and checked out the scene in town before taking off. That might be it for Indian Summer.

Anyway, those were my past two weekends. One other piece of "news:" greedy Don now has an Amazon wish list. More on this as Christmas approaches.

Tuesday, November 04, 2003

Wow, here it is November already... just got back from voting, hope you voted too.

Killer weekend: Last Friday was a Halloween night ride (in costume: I was Frankenstein) down the towpath, where Genesis Bicycles mechanics set up spooky scary stuff. After that it was down to Which Brew (sheesh, where else?) for their Halloween bash. Saturday I was kind of hurting, but did my normal coffeehouse/gym/errands day then went to Alan & Colette Flory's --remember them? -- for a "Hot Spicy Food" dinner party, saw some people I haven't seen in a while, like Al Flory and Mike Hess, another old Chain Gang member. His wife works at the gym I go to, so I see her maybe once a week depending on schedules, but I literally haven't seen him in years. He looks the same... Sunday was a Lehigh ride on South Mountain, plenty of fun, then lunch at a new Mexican place on Main Street in Bethlehem.

Other things: My brother Kevin got married in early October. The wedding was down in Florida, and needless to say it was a blast. We also had a great ride maybe two weekends ago, two laps around Blue Marsh Lake to simulate the Vermont 50-Miler race. Only the Workmans got their entries accepted (web-based entry forms, filled up within hours); unfortunately the real race -- unlike our Blue Marsh 50 -- was a deluge and a fiasco. (I wrote at length about both of these, but my post got screwed up & lost, and I didn't have the heart to re-write it. More on both of those some other time, maybe.)

A Cultural Weekend:

Friday nite was bluegrass and cask-conditioned Troegs (speaking of culture) at Which Brew, probably the best nite there so far, and that's saying something...

Saturday I checked out the Allen Ginsberg photo exhibit (apparently he was a bit of a shutterbug all thru the beat years) at the Allentown Art Museum. I highly recommend this for anyone who's in the least interested in the Beat poets, or even just plain good photography.

Sat nite was back to Allentown for "Bat Boy: The Musical." I still love Bat Boy, but I'm pretty sure I still don't like musicals, let's just leave it at that...

Sunday was a tag-team whoopass ride with the Workmans, as Bob led an Allamuchy ride, which ended up at Kittatinny State Park where Karen took over at breakneck pace, then back to Bob for the suffer-o-rama back to the trailhead: 35 miles, all very hard and all fast. Ouch!!

"I said roadrunner once,
Roadrunner twice,
I'm in love with rock & roll
& I'll be out all night."
- Jonathan Richman

WNTI-FM is having a banner day. I'm out running errands (drycleaning, food shopping, buying underwear, all a part of my glamorous lifestyle you know), and I turn the radio on to hear a "non-standard" version of Roadrunner which is just too cool, so I have to wait in the parking lot for the song to end before getting my drycleaning. Good but skippable song while I run & get my shirts, but then, on the way home, I hear Richard Thompson's 1952 Vincent Black Lightning, which is a legendary song, at least in my mind. Finally, to top it all off, there is an accordion band (complete with dorky/ironic singer) doing a cover of Jimi Hendrix's Fire. Stuck in the car listening once again, before I can go in the house.

By the way: Allamuchy was great -- pics and results are posted here. Pretty soon I'll post a few stories from the race & also the Cancer Ride. Meantime, back to the chores...

BTW#2: rereading High Fidelity and A Walk in the Woods, both excellent and both very funny.

1952 VINCENT BLACK LIGHTNING -- by Richard Thompson

Oh says Red Molly to James "That's a fine motorbike.
A girl could feel special on any such like"
Says James to Red Molly "My hat's off to you
It's a Vincent Black Lightning, 1952.
And I've seen you at the corners and cafes it seems
Red hair and black leather, my favourite colour scheme"
And he pulled her on behind and down to Boxhill they did ride

Oh says James to Red Molly "Here's a ring for your right hand
But I'll tell you in earnest I'm a dangerous man.
For I've fought with the law since I was seventeen,
I robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine.
Now I'm 21 years, I might make 22
And I don't mind dying, but for the love of you.
And if fate should break my stride
Then I'll give you my Vincent to ride"

"Come down, come down, Red Molly" called Sergeant McRae
"For they've taken young James Adie for armed robbery.
Shotgun blast hit his chest, left nothing inside.
Oh come down, Red Molly to his dying bedside"
When she came to the hospital, there wasn't much left
He was running out of road, he was running out of breath
But he smiled to see her cry
He said "I'll give you my Vincent to ride"

Says James "In my opinion, there's nothing in this world
Beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl.
Now Nortons and Indians and Greeves won't do,
Ah, they don't have a soul like a Vincent 52"
Oh he reached for her hand and he slipped her the keys
Said "I've got no further use for these.
I see angels on Ariels in leather and chrome,
Swooping down from heaven to carry me home"
And he gave her one last kiss and died
And he gave her his Vincent to ride.

Jest passin' thru...

Back from the Cancer Ride, where I finished John Adams, reread Vineland (it's being read & discussed on the Pynchon mailing list) and picked up The Recognitions where I left off, as well as riding 560 miles... Tomorrow -- actually, today at this point -- I'm going to Allamuchy to set up camp for the race on Saturday. I have plenty of stories, but they'll have to wait to show up here. By the way: rode hard all day, every day for a week, got home & got on the scale -- gained 5 pounds.

Listening to the Acoustic Charts on Soundclick.com, reading Runciman's Byzantine Civilization and thinking of Arianism ("one iota of difference"), Monophysitism, yadda yadda...

Tuesday, July 29, 2003

I'm starting to get ready for Allamuchy, and I have this week to shop/pack/prepare for the Cancer Ride, and I have like zero free time for the rest of the week, so of course I go and buy a new book.

Mom emailed, her book club is reading Founding Brothers, which I borrowed so she wants me to ship it back. Meantime, she recomended that John Adams biography, which came out to much fanfare about a year ago, so I picked up the trade paperback last weekend.

Really good book so far (about 250 pages in, maybe halfway or a little more), and is giving me a more sympathetic view of our 2nd Prez than the one I had.

One banana, two banana,
Three banana, four,
Four bananas make a bunch
And so do many more!
-- "The Banana Splits Theme"

Just a quick fly-by to say yes I'm still alive...

Last post was before July; since then was Independence Day (engagement party for my brother, at my parents in NJ), then a weekend visiting Dona & Shawn in MD (road ride Sat, MTB at Michaux on Sunday) and back in time for Easton's Heritage Day fireworks., and last weekend a trip to French Creek, a Lehigh Wheelmen ride sponsored by Joe & Cindy -- it was pretty much a Chain Gang ride though, based on who showed up...

In between all that was work, and lots of riding, and the realization that I could stand to lose quite a few pounds, so now I'm buckling down, bought good healthy food to eat at home (I eat out too often: expensive, hi-calorie meals, plus a beer or two to wash it down, that adds up quickly even with the bike burning it off.) So, my goal is to lose 10 pounds by Allamuchy, which is a month away. I should be able to get close, the 500-mile PPRAC "cancer ride" is about a week away...

Speaking of Allamuchy: this year I'm not doing it solo, that's right I will be on a team. The Chain Gang theme this year is "Saturday Morning Cartoons," so our team is The Banana Splits -- I get to be Bingo! I'm on a four-man team with Doug, Brian and Eric.

Speaking of Eric: I was over Doug's yesterday (stopped by after a trip to UPS), and Lori said I'd just missed Doug because he just ran up to UPS -- like ships passing in the night -- but could I stick around? He had a mission of mercy to go on, and could use some help.
Seems Kris & Eric's new house has some serious water problems, which really only manifested themselves after that heavy rain. Eric was stuck at work, but Doug had some sandbags he was going to bring over to try and reroute the water flow. Naturally I went with him, and we had a most exciting adventure driving through flooded, hilly Bethlehem areas (uh, why do they call it "Fountain Hill?"), streets knee-deep or more with water raging like mountain streams, cars stalled everywhere with wet wires etc, and Doug blasting through with his 4WD pickup, like the Dukes of Hazzard or something... Kris was home, had a real "refugee" look to her eyes, told us of a pretty rough night digging ditches in the lawn in the pouring rain, pumping water out of the basement etc. We set up the sandbags, and though we would have liked to do more there really wasn't much else to do (& her dad was there, to "hold my hand while my house washes away," as Kris put it), so we took off. Pretty serious rain last few days, thunderstorms like the end of the world.

That's it for now. Tra la la, la-la la la...

Writing this on "Sunday night," aka Monday morning.

Yesterday (Saturday, that is) I woke up to a call from a telemarketer, but with a twist: the message was a recording. There came a point where the recording said "Press 9 to order your Williamsburg vacation," so I did, then asked a lot of questions like "Who are you?" and "Do you know it's a federal crime for a telemarketer to use a recording like that?" and the human on the other end immediately hung up -- or rather, she transferred me to some (no doubt randomly chosen) landscaping business, possibly to screw up any star-69 (or whatever) attempts to track them down. Ahhh, but I'm on to them now...

Ran my usual Saturday-morning errands, had breakfast at O'Neils Coffeeshop downtown, then hit the gym for a light (ie summer) workout. First time back in a while, but the anti-vertigo stuff has been working really well, especially the spray, and I have no problems with lying down (say, to lift weights, or for that matter to sleep). Anyway, I felt good.

It was nice out, but since I rode every day since last Sunday and would ride today -- which of course is yesterday's tomorrow, or something -- I decided to take it easy physically for the rest of the day. I got a sub, some sodas and a frappucino, then grabbed Mason & Dixon and went down to Riverside Park (Riverview Park?) to spend the afternoon, about four hours and 100 pages and watching the Lehigh flow by.

A little revelation: I think I like M&D so much because the story (strange as this might sound) reminds me of myself, and of my own life.

Anyway, today (Sunday) I rode with Lee S and a few of his old Spoke'N'Wheel teammates, at Chimney Rock in Jersey. They were sort of taking it easy (when Lee or his friend Dave really open it up, I can't even keep them in sight) but we weren't slacking, and I felt good and could hang comfortably at the pace we rode; I felt especially confident over the many log crossings, just floating over them suckers. Ride wise, it was a very good day, and they're a fun bunch.

"I'm healthy as a horse,
Ahh, but everything is spinning."
-- Iggy Pop, "Nothing Comes My Way"

Yep, the vertigo is back. Shit. Shit shit. Shit shit shit shit shit!

It hit me last Monday at lunchtime, thought maybe it was a food allergy by the way it came on. Left work, went to doctor on Tuesday morning, and now I'm back on meclizine and a new nasal spray, but now I have to get an MRI as they go looking for the underlying cause.

Meantime, rides. Luckily, the balance problem doesn't seem to bother the riding as much as the walking (especially walking in the dark); I guess the biking balance is visual enough to compensate. Anyway, felt better Monday afternoon, so I rode the towpath. Ditto Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, so 75 miles in for the week by that point...

Thursday I packed, and Friday morning I left for Mountain Bike Weekend in Jim Thorpe, got there around 11:00 AM. This was the 18th annual MBW, and my 11th. There was still a crowd (1000 participants as usual, but I suspect they had fewer people to turn away this year after it filled up), though I couldn't unload one ticket, and one of my friends was a no-show, and Brian got there Saturday morning only to leave very early Sunday morning... just not the same as the old days...

Anyway, Friday was OK, Fri nite was rainy, Sat was OK except for a few storm fronts or something that came through, Sat nite was OK (good campfire weather), and Sunday was beautiful but by then the show was over.

The traditional "Chain Gang Jim Thorpe Epic" was slated for Saturday as usual, but because of the Game Lands situation, Broad Mountain would not be a part of the ride, so there would be no chance of epic distances if we stuck to tradition. Instead, we went to Tamaqua, where there was going to be a race on Sunday, and rode the race course as well as a whole bunch of other stuff. (Did I mention we rode Tamaqua the week before, in an unsuccesful attempt to put together a connection between the Summit Hill and Tamaqua trails? I know there's one out there, we just haven't found it yet...) We were on top of the mountain when we heard thunder, so we went back to a teenage party spot we'd passed earlier, that had a lean-to, and we waited out the storm there. After the storm passed we rode some more up top, then dropped down through terra incognita back to the race course, which was at the base of the hill. We finished off with a lap of the racecourse, but it was all one soggy mess and really wore us out: our fifteen miles today felt harder (according to some of us) than the standard epic's 40.

Got back a little earlier than usual, ate, got a massage, then chilled and celebrated Brian's birthday with a few brewskis, then I passed out around midnight. Woke up again aroiund 1:00 to check out the naked chick riding through camp...

Sunday was my day. Everyone else was leaving early, but Pete H and I had tickets to the church breakfast in Summit Hill. Pete drove -- he was also leaving somewhat early -- but I rode down and we ate, and ate, and ate...

After that I checked out the trails west of Summit Hill, then hit the singletrack near the strippings, where I picked up an entourage of lost riders, and finally dropped down the Marble Trail (in front of an audience -- and I made it!! woo hoo!!) and took the Switchback back to camp. Packed up, swam in the lake -- my first actual bathing experience since Thursday -- and then headed home.

Dinner was Thai food w/ Joe G, who said his formal knee rehabilitation is coming to a close and he should be back in the saddle soon. (He called today to say he rode the towpath.)

So now here it is Tuesday night, and I'm ready to crash.
