Just For The Record

Morning weigh-in (Friday): 194.5#, 16% BF

Just thought I'd get that registered, since it's the first time in months that I've been below 195 pounds.

There might have been a bit of weight suppression in there: I skipped the ride Wednesday night, but got one in on Thursday, a short towpath ride that felt like I was bonking or something. Got home and ate dinner, which consisted of a baked potato and some cookies, no wonder my weight was down. This morning was a mile run followed by breakfast, before I had a chance for an official weigh-in, and that's just as well, because yesterday was chores and errands followed by a night out -- I was probably fully unsuppressed by the time I went to bed.

Today is a beautiful day, and I am enjoying it for now by playing with the computer (I got a book on WordPress and am playing with my other site); in a few minutes I'll be going out to do a bit of yard work.

I Swear I've Been Good!

Morning weigh-in: 199#, 11.5% BF

Except for maybe last night's dinner, a Rueben with hot wings at Brew Works...

RIP Steve Schmidt: That was the painful, stressful thing I couldn't talk about last week. He'd been sick for a while, we knew that, but it turned out to be much worse than we realized, and he passed on Saturday morning. There's a lot to be said about Steve, and his place in our lives as well as his role in the Lehigh Valley cycling community, but it'll have to wait. This past week has been a bit difficult.

Meantime, we hosted some people overnight Saturday for that climate change conference, and that was surprisingly smooth and pleasant -- I'd been stressing about this since we made the decision to host, but the two young women who stayed over were pleasant and charming (and unobtrusive), and in the end I have no regrets about it at all.

Any, it rained all day Saturday do we did some morning yoga and weights, and I did a short ride on the Turner yesterday. The trails? Soon, but not yet. (Roads are fine, but I was on the Turner with high hopes.)

For The Record

Morning weigh-in: 197.5#, 11% BF

Just checking in to post those weights. I had some discouraging weigh-ins during that little hiatus, and also started eating breakfast in the morning (not the cause of my weight problems, but instead a step in the right direction) and I like to weigh myself under the same conditions every time, ie before eating breakfast, thus I was conveniently unable to do any official weigh-ins.

Those bad weights were in the 199#-200# range, by the way, nothing more serious than they had been, but discouraging after I started to try to keep track and cut down... Since the last post though, we signed up for a 10K+ running race and have been training, or "training," intermittently ever since; I've also started to do some light lifting and calisthenics at home too, which I think actually does more for weight loss than even the harder kinds of cardio.

There's a lot to write right now, bad and sad news -- we're fine, but that's not true for big chunks of our world, more on this when I can say more -- and much that's good as well, but all that news will have to wait for another day.

Except this: we decided to go to Denmark this summer; we'll be traveling with our friends Donna and John. Donna has friends there and visits every so often, and we decided to go along and see what this Nordic Socialism and Bicycling scene is all about.

Also this: we've been thinking of doing that "Warm Showers" thing, sort of a noncommercial AirBnB for cyclists. This weekend we're giving it a dry run, not with "Warm Showers" per se, but we've offered a place to sleep for some people in town for the Climate Change conference at Lehigh.

Three Front Followup

Happy Candlemas-mas! Judging by the weather forecast, Puxnatawney Phil may have some bad news for us tomorrow...

Anyway, some updates:

My running continues semi-apace; I managed to follow my program exactly for exactly one week, then I took the next week entirely off (snowstorms and bitter cold made good excuses). This past week I got back in the game, but I'm not quite back to my program yet. I'm doing a half-marathon in late April, and it's going to be here sooner than I'd like. Meantime, I got my Turner back, with new Hope disk brakes, though I have not gone on a ride yet -- maybe early tomorrow morning, before the chili contest? We also we got in a few XC ski sessions in the past few weeks, and we signed back up at the gym. The pieces are there, I just have to put them in place.

Next up, the jukebox project came together like clockwork, but then we had some Internet problems and the router got rebooted, and when things came back on the NAS and the Raspberry Pi couldn't talk to each other: I had them configured to refer to each other by their IP addresses, which got reassigned when the router restarted. Easy enough to fix as long as I'm around to do it, but not the ideal solution, so (after going through a few hoops, like installing avahi on the Pi), I can now refer to the NAS and the Pi by name. Shut things down, started them up, and it all worked no problem. I've really enjoyed playing with networks and  multiple machines, something I know almost nothing about, and now I think Ill come up with some more Pi projects like a local web server, a print server, and maybe even a weather station (something I've been thinking of doing for years).

And finally, on the cello front, I took my first lesson this past Tuesday. Pretty awesome, I'm on my way -- I can already (almost) play "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star!"

Power Stroke

There's a significance to the solstice coming just before the New year. It's sort of like in the I Ching, when some phenomenon or process nears its maturity, the first signs of change, of the coming new phenomenon, are already starting to show themselves. We pass bottom dead center of the year at the solstice, the shortest day, and momentum takes us on to the new year when we make our resolutions -- maybe there's a crankshaft and piston somewhere, now it reaches the position to get the most benefit from any effort, and so now is the time when we commit to the efforts we resolve on. So anyway, in that spirit, here are my New Year's resolutions:

1. Get my diet under control: Things aren't really all that bad right now, my diet has been worse in the past, but I've been developing bad habits recently -- especially at work where it's easy to get a bacon, egg & cheese sandwich for breakfast and a burger for lunch -- and this is a good excuse to do something about it. Nothing too crazy: we've cut way back on eating out, basically by eating at home before we go out, and that's been major improvement.

Strange to say, it's more an appetite thing than anything else: when I'm hungry I want the greasy bread and cheese mistakes more than anything else on earth, but I'm usually sated just as well, and for a longer time, with healthy stuff, especially if I didn't already reach the "crave" stage -- I never want an apple when I'm hungry, but I eat one and I'm satisfied. Meantime, when I eat a cheese steak for dinner, I'm bloated immediately afterward but ravenous in the morning, while if I eat, say, some vegetarian dinner, I'm less stuffed afterward, and less hungry the next morning; things are in better balance when I eat to make it so. I guess the trick is to unlearn desire for the things I crave.

2. Exercise more: This goes with the first resolution; though exercise can sometimes mask rather than compensate for bad dietary choices, some of my less-than-swimsuit fitness can be chalked up to a drop-off in my level of activity, with no concomitant reduction in my food intake -- the eating stayed the same, but I was no longer burning it off. A quick look at my Garmin data shows that in 2009 I averaged about 6 hours of exercise a week -- at a time when I did not record much exercise other than cycling, but was going several times a week each to yoga and the gym, so that 6 was more likely 12 hours a week -- to averaging 4 hours a week total in 2012. So yeah, there's been a drop-off...

My exercise resolution is just to stick with a more active process. Anne and I have been running every other morning, and lifting at home on the off days. Neither workout is very intense: the run is about 2.5 miles at a 10 minute pace, and the weight workout is a short upper-body dumbbell routine with light weights. I think I'll keep that the way it is, but add an afternoon bike ride on the weight days and a short yoga routine on running day afternoons. (These configurations may change, we'll see how it works out -- yoga may be better for the morning, and weights in the afternoon.)

I think I'll keep the intensity pretty low for the first few months, though maybe increasing the volume of the afternoon workouts. Rubber and road may have something to say about these plans.

3. Bring more organization to my finances: Not much to say here -- I've fallen under the influence of Mr Money Mustache, and I just want to save a bit more money, maybe get a better handle on budgeting and knowing where my money goes now, spend it more wisely, and start investing some more of what I save.

4. Put a little more effort into work: Again, nothing much to say here, and I have no specific plan -- I'm pretty happy with my job, and I think my employers are happy with me, but there's always room for improvement...

5. Read a little more: I was planning to set a goal, say one book a week, but there are books, and books -- some are longer than others, or more difficult  reads, and these are usually the ones I like. This resolution was inspired by someone else's resolution to read a book a day for a year, but the details of how he did it (shorter books, easier books) were less than inspiring. So, since my other resolutions are more about self-improvement process than specific goals, I'm just going to resolve to read more.

6. Write a little more: This one sort of developed while I was talking about the "more reading" resolution with Anne last night. I may write in other venues (like those nature journals), but I think that this resolution will essentially mean that we can expect more blog posts here.

So there you have it -- my resolutions for 2013. I might add that I'll try to be a better person (not that I'm an especially bad one).
